TravelBank Supports Lufthansa Group’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program

Today, TravelBank announced its support of Lufthansa Group’s efforts to make flying more sustainable with a contribution to Lufthansa Group’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) program. The bulk fuel purchase is supportive of TravelBank’s efforts to provide its user base with increasingly more sustainable travel options. TravelBank is the first technology travel agency SAF deal for Lufthansa Group in the United States.

The Lufthansa Group is one of the world’s leading aviation organizations comprising numerous renowned airlines and services that exemplify excellence in air travel. The Group’s carriers include Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Discover, and include hubs from Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels.

The Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO₂ balance (“net zero carbon emissions”) by 2050. Already by 2030, the Lufthansa Group aims to halve its net CO₂ emissions from their 2019 levels through reduction and offset measures. The 2030 reduction target was validated by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in August 2022.

Furthermore, Lufthansa Group became the first European airline group to join the First Movers Coalition (FMC) – which is a global initiative led by the World Economics Forum and the U.S. Department of State. In support of this commitment, the Lufthansa Group has invited TravelBank to participate in this global
initiative.

“TravelBank is proud to partner with Lufthansa Group on this milestone initiative and to be able to offer more sustainable options for our user base. This is just the beginning,” said co-founder and CEO, Duke Chung. This is part of TravelBank’s larger commitment as an organization towards a more sustainable future, in general, and especially in aviation.

“The Lufthansa Group is excited to bring on a company like TravelBank to be a part of our mission in connecting people, cultures and economies in the most sustainable way,” said Dirk Janzen, Vice President Passenger Sales, The Americas, Lufthansa Group Airlines.

Lufthansa Group pursues ambitious sustainability goals

The Lufthansa Group has set itself ambitious climate protection goals and aims to achieve a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050. Already by 2030, the Lufthansa Group wants to halve its net CO₂ emissions compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures. The reduction share of the 2030 target was validated by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in August 2022. The Lufthansa Group was the first airline group in Europe with a science-based CO₂ reduction target in line with the goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. For effective climate protection, the Lufthansa Group is focusing in particular on accelerated fleet modernization, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the continuous optimization of flight operations, and offers for its private travelers and corporate customers to make a flight or the transport of cargo more sustainable. In addition, the Lufthansa Group has been actively supporting global climate and weather research for many years. The Lufthansa Group’s commitment to sustainability is rated positively and above the industry average by independent rating organizations.
